Top 12 Common Sliding Door Disaster Problems

We have seen every sliding door disaster problem you could imagine, so we decided to write about our top 12 common sliding door disaster problems.

In no particular order, here are the common sliding door problems we see every single day. We’ve been fixing sliding doors for 25 years and continue to see these issues time and time again.

The good news is we can fix these, and our replacements parts are the best you can get.

Some people ask if you should replace or repair your sliding door. Click play on the video below to see my answer to that question.

Every sliding door issue below has been fixed by our team.

1. Your sliding door plastic roller is broken

Shows a white plastic roller where the side has broken away causing the roller and hence the door to keep coming off the track. Also, notice that the track is in good condition and is polished Stainless steel.

sliding door problems

What has happened here is that the track and rollers were repaired recently by an inexperienced repairer.

The old track was not machined before fitting the Stainless Steel cover.

This caused the roller edge to break away because the new stainless steel track finished wider than what was required by the concave roller.

Hence the roller had no choice but to break.

2. The sliding door rollers have disintegrated and broken completely

This time the cheap plastic tyre of the sliding door roller has broken away from the bearing prematurely.

The tyre shows little wear.

This is where the sliding door roller repair is a must.

broken door roller

The tyre has broken because the quality of the plastic in the roller tyre was poorly manufactured.

3. Broken plastic tyre and a destroyed aluminium sliding door track

The two images below show the remaining bearing after the plastic tyre has broken away.

If the door is continued to be used at this stage, then the result can only spell disaster for the aluminium track.

This example of a hard steel bearing on a relatively soft aluminium track will destroy the aluminium track very quickly.

4. Your sliding door has worn out rollers, but they haven’t come away yet

The next four images show similarly worn out rollers.

You can see that the plastic tyres are broken but have not come away from the bearings of the rollers.

The continued use of sliding doors in this condition wear the door and hence broken.

Then, the worn rollers are dragged across the soft aluminium track, destroying the integrity of the track.

If you leave this issue unchecked, it will result in premature wear of a new set of rollers.

5. Your wardrobe sliding door has a badly worn or damaged roller and carriage

The image below shows a very badly worn wardrobe roller and carriage.

If this door with a worn roller is not repaired, then the resulting damage to the track will cause more damage to roller carriage and then the door.

In bad cases, the sides have been torn away from the panel leaving the panel, which in the case of glass, vulnerable and easy to break.

6. Your sliding door has a completely worn track

The image below shows a worn track.

dirty sliding door trackDark and light areas can be seen which correspond to the worn parts.

The track is about 15 years old, and although not deeply scratched or scored, these areas represent corrugations which would be disastrous to a new roller if not fixed.

If you want to see a really bad sliding door track, one that has been completely warped over time, click the play button below.

7. Your door struggles to move due to the top frame collapsing down

The image below shows an aluminium sliding door struggling to move because the top main frame has collapsed down onto the door.

As a consequence, the rollers and carriages and track have been crushed.

And the continued use of this door has finally prevented the door from being moved at all.

This sort of problem is common with double doors i.e., two fixed panels and two sliding panels. One opens to the left and one to the right. The reason being that double sliding doors require a greater opening width with a much longer lentil in the wall.

Usually, about 4 or 5 meters and over the years the lentil sags just a bit in the frame and door.

sliding door top track

8. Your door was broken, and the repairman did a quick fix that doesn’t work long-term

The image below shows a common very unsatisfactory repair.

A corner bracket made of aluminium has been riveted onto the door in an attempt to stabilise the door and stop the stile from coming away from the glass because the fastener that holds the stile (side) of the door to the top rail has been broken.

Most likely at some stage, the repairer broke the top fastener when trying to repair the door and did not feel inclined to replace the fastener shank with a new fastener.

9. Your door has exposed bearings with the tyre broken

This picture shows two identical sliding door carriages from the same door. One with an exposed bearing because the tyre broke and came away some time ago. The other shows the tyre intact but worn.

10. Your aluminium is starting to split and break away

This picture shows an adjustment screw on the side of a Wunderlich door where the aluminium is starting to split and break away.

The aluminium side cannot support the weight of the door since the carriage pivots under the door and against the side.

broken base of sliding door

11. Your sliding door has collapsed, and the door has no rollers

This picture shows the same door but on the other side. This time the side has fully collapsed, allowing the door to drop onto the track. Movement of the door at this stage just destroys the track.

chipped sliding door base

12. Your repairman replaced the rollers with cheap, inferior equipment

The image below shows two carriages manufactured for Wunderlich doors. The carriage on the right is the original design. The carriage on the left is the replacement carriage.

Notice that the left-hand carriage below is designed to pivot against the door and therefore can cause damage, while the right-hand carriage is self-pivoting and therefore does not stress the door.

This is an example of cheaper replacement parts only ending up costing more money in the long run. There are cheap sliding door repairs but you get what you pay for.

Our sliding stacker doors work better now than they did when they were installed 10 years ago! Thanks to Stephen and Jessie for prompt and very professional service repair. We've already had one repair and the door had broken again. This time it's been fixed properly, with stainless steel wheels instead of plastic. Slides like a dream. Would recommend. :)

Adsafe Doors was a professional sliding door repairer who focused on sliding door track and roller. Stephen knew how to fix up a typical ageing door with good rollers (4 rollers to spread the load of the sliding door instead of 2 rollers) and steel track. I could use the door with just one finger after the repair. Thanks.

From the first enquiry phone call to my waving the Adsafe team off after completion of the job I felt confident and happy that I’d chosen the right company to fix my ageing door. Stephen and Jess did a wonderful job, and I’m happy I can use the door with just one finger. Thank you!!

From the first over phone discussion to the job completion Steve and Jess did a fantastic job. Our 50 year old difficult to open sliding door operates now better than a new door. I would recommended Adsafe Doors to repair your sliding doors.

Stephen and Jessie performed a miracle here. A heavy sliding glass door which had dropped so low it scraped along the floor causing an ear-piercing screech. Now it glides silently along its track at the touch of one finger! Professional duo with a lovely friendly rapport, I can't recommend these two highly enough. Thank you both so much, I feel extremely lucky to have found you.

Contacted this company originally via their online site - they did not respond. I called them a week or so later - spoke to Stephen. He gave me a quote over the phone - no issues and we discussed what may or may not need to be done. He called me on a Sunday - confirmed possible works - gave him an address - we booked job in. Job was planned for tomorrow ( Nov 2023). Stephen called me just now - " sorry - my guys dont want to travel that far to your suburb" - we cannot do the job now for that reason. I'm an hour from North Parramatta - their company address. So this comany - good or bad - cannot respond to their own website traffic without a prompt - then after confirming the job - cancel the day before - because an hour is too far to travel. We live in Sydney - everywhere is an hour. I'll let you draw your own conclusion. I wish I could give no stars. 2/2 - I can get to Parramatta most times in an hour - its a pain - but its do able. Google maps says to your address to mine 1hr 8min. My review is accurate and you called me & accepted the work. Dont accept the work if you cannot do it or dont want to travel to do it. Its no prob anyway - I replaced the rollers myself for less than $50 - and the doors work fine again.

Had sliding door runners that had self destructed due to sandy backyard. Door was extremely difficult to move. Contacted Stephen to describe the problem out at Kingsford. Quote and convenient date and time organised. Stephen rang that morning, was running a little early, no problem. Had enough time to secure my 2 dogs. Requested him when accessing our property to semi secure the side gate so our dogs couldn't escape. Stephen explained the process, replaced the original poor quality minimal door runners, with what looked like heavy duty multiple runners. Door is now opening and closing with minimal effort. Cleaned up worksite, including vacuuming the aluminium shards off the ground, from adapting and correcting the door running guide. Really happy with Stephen's and helper pleasant demeanour. Very happy to recommend. Allan

We had a very hard to close sliding door that had been in situ for 12 years. It took a huge heave to open the door and we thought would have to replace the entire door and track. We called Steve and within a few days he came out to fix our door. Once Steve had finished we could open the sliding door with our little finger - the result was truly remarkable! We couldn't recommend the Adsafe Doors service highly enough. Thanks Steve !

Steven and partner came today and fixed a glass sliding door that had become difficult to open. Explained what they would need to do, and put in double rollers as opposed to the single rollers already in the door. Laid a new track - door opens without effort now - perfect. And Steven kindly fixed the noise issue with the crimsafe door as well.

Needed both hands to open & close our 30 year old doors, the glass & flyscreen sliding doors we very hard to operate. After comparing costs for replacing doors and frame or calling in the repair experts decided to go with the experts in Steve. Called and told him the problem, Steve gave a quote over the phone and arranged to attended site in a few days. Steve and his apprentice worked their magic in under 2 hours, I fair dinkum cannot believe the difference they have done. Boths doors can be slid the whole lenght of opening by one finger, it's even better than when the door was brand new. You will not be disappointed with this company and would highly recommend.

Contacted Adsafe Doors to repair sliding glass door. Was quoted $800 over the phone. I asked a few questions about the price, how long does it take and cost of parts. He refused stated that it was a phone quote and he does not supply that information. He then was very rude when I questioned why he could not supply an invoice stating the labour and parts cost. I said any repair work, you are usually given a cost for labour and parts. He denied that this ever happens, continued to be rude. He could not guarantee that the door would be fixed, he would not come out and look at the door for a service fee. Something I was willing to pay. He continued to be rude. I have since had my door repaired including everything that Adsafe were going to do for $500. New rollers (not made in China) which is what Adsafe said was all I could get if I employed someone else or went to Bunnings. Track machined and new one installed. All that Adsafe said they would do for $300 less. As a customer I expect that if spending $800 I am entitled to know my door will work properly, that I am given an invoice with parts and labour costs and that my questions are answered in a polite manner. Very poor customer service and not honest with their quotes. Update on Adsafe Doors. Received a further reply today after so many weeks. Just to be clear, Adsafe will only quote you prices over the phone. They do not come out to even look at your doors. They have a one price $800 that fits all jobs. I can only comment on my experience with this company. My sliding doors were repaired for $500 compared to the $800 Adsafe were going to charge. If you need sliding doors fixed save yourself money and ring the Sliding Door Doctor. Excellent service, prompt, friendly and very professional. My doors slide beautifully. I would not ring anyone else but the Sliding Door Doctor. Save yourself $300.

Fabulous customer service and arrived on time. Our sliding door was noisy and hard to open. The rollers at the bottom of the door were no longer working. They were quite tricky to remove and replace but for Stephen and Jess it was all in a days work. Extremely professional and would highly recommend this company. Thank you Mark and Jo - Kellyville

Wanting to thank Steve and team for the excellent service I received for my heavy, broken sliding door. The communication was great, they arrived on time and replaced the door frame tracks, realigned the door itself and fixed the locking mechanism in 1.5hrs. Amazing! Highly recommend this business and would definitely be calling on them again if we had any other problems. Thankyou.

Our 25 year old glass sliding door had collapsed in its tracks and required urgent surgery. A phone call to Stephen at Adsafe Doors soon had help on its way. Over the phone Stephen gave an accurate estimate and set up an appointment. Stephen and Jessie arrived right on time and got to work straight away. Quickly and expertly the door was removed, a new track was laid and new rollers installed. The door was then replaced on the tracks, fine adjustments carefully performed and the locking mechanism aligned. Then to complete the job Jessie conducted a complete clean up and no mess was left . Now the old door slides like a new one and the lock works perfectly. We have no hesitation in recommending this experienced team of workers.

I have this old aluminium sliding glass door. After years of repairs and never lasted long. Today I called around 4 companies, no-one was helpful. One company stated minimum $4,200 + per job or above if I accept they would send a person to come and measure. I finally got to Stephen on my 5th call, he took the time to understand my situation and given me options to considered. He suggested instead of replacing the whole door and glass unit, let's see if he could fix it instead. Stephen came as he promised and he fixed my door beautifully with absolute pride in his work. The best of it - the cost only a fraction of what others company have quoted me. THANK YOU Stephen and Jessie.

Our sliding door at home had been broken for months and got so bad, it worked better completely off of it's sliding tracks. But after getting in contact with Adsafe Doors, Stephen and Jessie were to the rescue by the following afternoon. They were both incredibly friendly, efficient and had the door back on and working very quickly. I would highly recommend them to anyone in need of sliding door repairs :)

I had a sliding door that refused to slide and a sliding security door that constantly came off its track. Stephen from Adsafe came out, fixed both doors and charged less than the original quote! I now have two doors that slide easily and a security door that provides security! Not only was the work completed quickly and professionally, but Stephen also rang to advise me that he was going to be a little later than the agreed time, due to traffic. Thanks for the excellent job and professional service.

We are so pleased with the repair done by Stephen to our sliding door. It would barely move before (and wouldn't lock) and was hanging lopsided, to now sliding perfectly. So pleased with this service. It is better than ever. The whole service from the first phone call where Stephen recommended ways to secure our place until he could repair the door to cleaning up properly before leaving was exceptional. We highly recommend Adsafe.
